Provincial Summer Institutes ~ Ontario Teachers Federation

July 11 - 13th, 2016

For the first time, the Ontario Teachers Federation agreed to "pilot" a summer institute in a First Nation community.  Over 3 days the learning took place at Kinomaagaye Lodge - a traditional round house at New Credit First Nation.  Participants also traveled to the "Mush Hole" in Brantford to tour the Residential School with survivor Geronimo Henry.  Traditional Knowledge Holders included Nancy Rowe (New Credit) and Ray John Jr (Oneida). Lessons From the Earth was highlighted as a practical application of Indigenous Knowledge in the classroom.

New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) - Dufferin Peel Catholic School Board
April - May 2016

In a series of 3 workshops, educators who are in there first two years of teaching had the opportunity to learn from Elders and Traditional Practitioners on how to respectfully and appropriately bring Indigenous understandings and ways of knowing into the classroom.  In partnership with our local community, Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation, educators spent one of the three days in a traditional teaching lodge learning about the importance of building relationships.
